Training Materials

In an impromptu demonstration filmed by workshop participant Shivaani Selvaraj, Susan explicates her mapping method in informal ‘interview’ conversation with Barbara Imle, who was employed at an agency that funds and monitors group homes for people with disabilities in California USA when ‘Bill,’ a group home resident, was suddenly brought into a Limited Conservatorship (Adult Guardianship) Process. Through the Conservatorship process, legal proceedings limit or terminate an individual’s rights to make decisions for themselves, such as where they live, who they can socialize with, medical and financial decisions. Barbara’s research aims to find out how it works.

This 20-minute video shows the beginning of the mapping session: the process of moving from Barbara’s experience to developing a concrete starting place, focus and direction for research into a complex institutional process.

The full 1 hour, 20-minute video available below shows building a ‘big picture’ map that specifies the extended ‘tracks’ Barbara can follow – connected sequences of institutional work that go on as talk and text-based actions in multiple settings, including a court hearing.
